Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month run by the Stress Management Society. This year's theme is: #BeTheChange, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

So many of us are living in a state of quiet stress and overwhelm. Telling ourselves things will settle down soon. That we just need to get through this week, this month, this phase. Sound familiar? You're far from alone. And more importantly, things really can feel different.

What the statistics say about stress

The scale of the problem is bigger than most people realise. And that's actually important to acknowledge, because it means this isn't a personal failing. It's a collective experience:

  • According to the Mental Health UK Burnout Report 2026, 91% of adults experienced high or extreme stress in the past year - with 39% of young adults aged 18-24 taking time off specifically because of stress-related mental health challenges.

  • Here in the UK, nearly 1 million workers experienced work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2024/25, accounting for 52% of all work-related ill-health cases and 62% of all working days lost to ill health. (Mates in Mind)

  • More than 22 million working days were lost to stress, depression or anxiety last year, and that figure is already climbing in 2026. (Health and Safety Executive)

Behind every one of those numbers is a real person doing their best. Maybe that's you right now. And if it is, I want you to know that getting support is one of the most positive and powerful things you can do.

I know this not just professionally, but personally. My own experience of stress was actually part of what led me to hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy helped me recover and I'm so glad it did. Watching the difference it makes, both in my own life and in the lives of clients is what inspires me everyday.

And it's not only work. Stress weaves itself through our relationships, family and finances too. Add in the background noise of economic uncertainty and global unrest, and it's little wonder so many of us are feeling the pressure. But here's the good news;  the brain is more adaptable than you might think!

Stress and the body

Stress isn't just a feeling,  it's a full-body experience. It raises blood pressure, disrupts sleep, weakens the immune system and plays havoc with digestion. It can make us feel anxious, short-tempered, foggy and disconnected from the people and things we enjoy the most.

The good news? Once you understand what stress is doing, you can start to change it. And that's exactly where hypnotherapy comes in.

Stress Awareness Month is a brilliant reminder to pause, check in with yourself honestly, and ask: what would it feel like to actually feel better?

So, how does Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help with stress?

When we're chronically stressed, the brain gets stuck in a threat-response cycle. The emotional brain takes over, flooding the body with adrenaline and cortisol and keeping us wired and on high alert. For many people, this stops being an occasional response and starts feeling like their default setting.

The brilliant thing is, it doesn't have to stay that way.

Solution focused hypnotherapy works to gently interrupt that cycle, and it does so in two really effective ways:

  1. The first is through solution focused conversation. Rather than dwelling on what's wrong, we focus on where you want to be. What would life look, feel and sound like with less stress? What's already going well, even in small ways? These conversations begin to shift your brain's focus, and that shift can lead to real, lasting change.

  2. The second is hypnosis, a natural, deeply relaxing state that most people find genuinely restorative. In this state, the mind becomes open to positive suggestions and visualisation. It's not about planting ideas that aren't yours, it's about helping your brain reconnect with the calmer, more capable version of you that's always been there.

This works because of neuroplasticity, the brain's wonderful ability to change and form new connections throughout our lives. Through hypnosis, we work with the subconscious mind to build new, healthier thought patterns, replacing old stress responses with something far more useful: calm, clarity and genuine resilience.

Clients often tell me they're sleeping better, feeling less reactive, and that things which used to send them into a spiral just don't have the same hold anymore. That kind of shift is possible for you too.
